From the point of view of Woking we are happy that Chris Chea, after a
period of disappointments, made a PB total and a PB C+J incompetition.
On the same day his young bro, Chi, did PB Snatch, PB jerk and PB
total in winning the British under 18s at 15 years old.

Recent Updates

The London Spring Open, run by Keith Morgan was a great success with a huge entry, As far as Woking is concerned the outstanding performance was from Chi Chea, age 15, with 61; 81 at 57.11.  He missed 83 jerk having cleaned it.

Other Woking lifters included the two older Chea brothers, and three newcomers of whom Shaun Joffe was the best placed with three PBs. The interest in Weightlifting is growing thanks to two factors: the Olympic games and the interest of other organisations: Crossfit; FK.UK  and the UK Strength & Conditioning Association. I hope our clubs have the space and coaches to take advantage of this.

Woking will be focused on the Lift of the Quarter in June: this time around it is the Clean and jerk, with the jerk being from behind the neck. Results with age and bodyweight to Jim Smith, Longwood House, Shifford lane; Standlake; Witney, Oxon with 25p per entry.

This lift should be a natural for Olympic lifters. And will any club knock Woking off its perch as the best all round lifting club in UK? Vectis, on the Isle of Wight, is threatening to do so. What puzzles me is that FK.UK and the Crossfit clubs are not participating to any great extent at the moment.

University of East London
Giles Greenwood has done a great job preparing their Gym instructors for the BWLA Club Coach award, with Part 2 slotted for mid June. Some of them will be lifting in the LSE Masters. They are also preparing for the Southern Universities championship being planned by the University of Middlesex.

Zoe Smith  snatched 84 and jerked 110 in the European Youth Champs. For three PBs she will receive £75 from the Weightlifters' Supporters Fund: in fact she seems to win this in every international. There are others who could also win but they fail to claim.

St. Mary's University College also appear to be benefitting from the increased interest in Olympic lifting with two new faces at the London Open, coached by David Woodhouse

MORI Poll

This poll is vital to help us all get better and more facilities and grants

We have to help ourselves! It takes 5 minutes to do.

This one is focused on real clubs.  The last one confused so-called health clubs and places with machines only with proper weightlifting facilities, and created the impression that there are 114000 weightlifters in England.

BWLA insisted that the new survey was more specific to weightlifting with free weights, realeted to BWLA activity.

Thank you for your time.

WCL Squad - The Rivals

Chris Chea has been selected as part of the World Class Lifting squad.  He has chosen the option of training in his club, but attending squads.

So the LSEW division now has two men in the squad: rivals Chris and Halil Zorba at 69 k. Currently Chris has been doing better in champs, but Halil is ahead on training lifts by virtue of a 160 k Clean & Jerk.

Congratulations to Woking Centre of Excellence member Chris Chea, who has been invited to the World Class Lifting squad as a remote member.

In this way, he will get grants and a variety of other services, plus attendance at weekly squads. Richly deserved!

Olympic Weightlifting at Middlesex University

Woking Weightlifters and Phil Nourse's Sutton sister club ran 2 workshops on Olympic lifting at Middlesex University.  They then exhibited lifting at the University's Student Strength and Conditioning Conference. The Uni is delighted and is keen to stage events, will affiliate to BWLA (the Governing Body of Olympic and all round weightlifting in Britain), and has already got two MSc students joining 'lifting clubs to compete.

At the conference Brian Hamill spent considerable time with young Strength and Conditioning Coaches who are trying to get their UKSCA accreditation, a sine qua non for big jobs in the main sports. It was clear to them that the BWLA lifters present, including 14 year old Chi Chea with a 60 Snatch and 80 Clean weighing 55 kg, were doing something quite different from what they had been taught.  The trouble was that the lifters were doing it so fast that they could not see how it was done!

They ended up reasonably convinced that they need to train with Olympic lifters.

After all, if I wanted to assist someone to sprint better you can bet I'd ask a sprinter or a sprint coach. It is such a pity that competent weightlifters are not used in Sport Improvement situations. They are well aware that their techniques may need modifications according to the student's main sport.

But then, there are so few of us and so few places where weightlifting is possible that an aspiring Strength and Conditioning coach may have a long way to go to find help.

My best advice is that such aspirants contact BWLA atsupport@bwla.co.uk with their location, and ask for a contact in that area. As a last resort contact brianhamill59@googlemail.com

Middle Chea Triumphs

Chris Chea, middle of the three Woking Weightlifting brothers, had a great day at the English Weightlifting champs on Saturday (20th) winning the 69 kg class. He thus has the pair: British and English champion. Not only that but he defeated his arch rival Halil Zorba. Both are vying for a place on the Commonwealth Games team

Chris, at 68.8 kg, Snatched 110 kg and Jerked 142, to Total 152, not quite the Games Qualifier, but certainly an improvement on his progress towards it.

The win is a reward for his decision to give up work in order to train full time, without subsidy of any sort: no mean feat when considering his need to consume vast amounts of high protein and carbohydrate rich foods

Big brother Koing placed second in the 94 kg category with 118 and 143 kg to Total 161, a competition best. He was well beaten by Russian origin Denis Catana, who brings from his home country the benefit of a state and school system which honours and respects weightlifting.

Our Woking members now wait to see how ‘little’ sibling Chi (14), makes out at the British schools champs where he may add a fifth British title to his current tally.

We are proud of the three brothers and other top class Woking lifters, though the borough seems unable to find a way to increase the space available for the busy club beyond the current cramped and, at times, dangerous room it occupies: baffling as there is abundant underutilized space in the leisure centre, or so it seems to coach Brian Hamill.

For the Woking Open Champs next Saturday Brian has had to apply a guillotine as the entries were so numerous as to threaten to overwhelm the leisure centre facility! It seems that, suddenly, weightlifting is becoming popular.
